2014 Highlights Fly Fishing at Spatsizi
Our incredible staff was a delight to work with, making our year in Spatsizi a truly memorable one. A huge thank you to our crew and a big thanks to Mary Henderson with her jet boat expertise and knowledge of Tatlatui and the Upper Firesteel River. Fly Fishing Season at Spatsizi Lodge
Early July was once again very fun and productive on our home waters, Laslui Lake and Stikine River. The inlet and outlet saw numerous Rainbows in the 12-16" range despite the huge Bull Trout (fresh water sharks) tormenting them. Hotleskwa was the place to be to target those 8-10 lb Bull trout. Luke tied up some nasty large flies that proved to be super effective on Bull trout - it’s always so cool to see those fresh water sharks move up from the bottom and hit Luke's creations. The Bull trout could be tricky but we saw some great fish caught by the Fowler Family and the Jury group. Some of our favorite days were at Tuaton Lakes and canoeing the upper Stikine back to Laslui Lake. During one trip, Matthew and Lynn Zetumer came across an unbelievable Rainbow trout feeding frenzy and had a solid 3.5 hours of double headers. You could literally hear hundreds of rainbow trout feeding - it was unbelievable!
The Firesteel always presents an opportunity to 'hunt' some beautiful Rainbow trout, and see osprey, moose, eagles and beavers milling about their habitat. The para-x and stimulators were the fly of the year - and the Firesteel offered anglers the classic trout water of rising fish, pockets, riffles, and foam lines. Mid-August was fantastic fishing for Peter & Alex Starr, the Wamplers and Ted Hasselbring; they all fished para-x and size 4 stimulators. It was a real pleasure to see so many families this year enjoying this little (BIG) piece of paradise.
